Understanding the Core Differences
PLC: Designed for discrete, high-speed, sequence-based control. DCS: Optimized for continuous process control. SCADA: Provides centralized monitoring and control of geographically distributed assets.
Decision Framework
Use a PLC when: discrete manufacturing with high-speed sequencing, standalone machine control, sub-millisecond response times required. Use a DCS when: continuous process with hundreds of I/O points, high availability requirements. Use SCADA when: geographically distributed assets, existing PLC/RTU infrastructure.
Hybrid Architectures
In practice, most large industrial facilities use a hybrid approach combining PLCs for high-speed control, DCS for process control, and SCADA for overall plant visibility.
